University appeared in Europe in the Middle Ages and has been developed and more accessible to people in many countries. As many people obtain the opportunity to attend university, each of them has different purposes of receiving high education; for example, they study in university to get a good career, to accomplish academic achievements or to volunteer for people in need. Despite their various surface reasons, their fundamental reason of attending university is to develop their problem-solving ability. This core purpose of high education has led to several changes in university.
These days theme-based undergraduate programs are increasing in many different forms. Although each discipline can provide meaningful approaches to a certain issue, a great increase in interdisciplinary programs proves that there are personal and social needs that they should understand and seek key solutions to some significant problems. These interdisciplinary programs offer students a variety of courses and experiences by which they can develop the ability to better observe, describe and assess a phenomenon that they are interested in. Therefore, a growing number of undergraduate students are choosing an interdisciplinary program to fit in their personal goal.
Other change has been made in assessment. Many professors in university now assess students not just with paper-and-pencil test but with an authentic task or project. While the era for a test to simply measure how much knowledge students have learned or how well they understand what they have learned has diminished, hands-on assessments to assess how students suggest a solution to a given problem on the basis of what they have learned gain more importance and power. This practical type of assessment is also one of the ways that university has chosen to adjust their education to personal and social demands.
Problem-solving competence is a principal element to every field. People who wish to act in different areas are commonly required to develop this ability in university. The above-mentioned changes that university has made also indicates that university students should learn how to properly solve a problem.
